In reply to your letter No.313 of

February, 1901, I am directed by His Excellency the

Governor to inform you that this Goverment has mo

instructions to pay for any buildings taken over from

the Chinese Goverment, As, however, the delay in taking

over the Lighthouse on the 1st. January, 1901, was occa-

sioned by this Goverment, His Excellency is prepared to

pay the running expenses from that date to the 1st.

I am furhter to point out that the

Colonial Government is taking over the expense of main-

taining this light at the request of the Chinese Govern-

ment.
